The La Leche League
International mission is: To help mothers worldwide to breastfeed through
mother-to-mother support, encouragement, information, and education and
to promote a better understanding of breastfeeding as an important element
in the healthy development of the baby and mother.

La Leche
League is...
an organization founded in 1956 by seven women who wanted to make breastfeeding
easier and more rewarding for both mother and child. The organization
offers information and encouragement—primarily through personal
help—to those women who want to breastfeed their babies.
International
La Leche League is active in 65 countries and territories, reaching more
than 200,000 mothers monthly through a network of more than 6,700 accredited
Leaders who work on a volunteer basis.
La Leche League International
is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in consultative status with UNICEF,
is an NGO in official relations with the World Health Organization (WHO),
acts as a registered Private Voluntary Organization for the Agency for
International Development (USAID), is an accredited member of the US Healthy
Mothers/Healthy Babies Coalition, is a member of the Child Survival Collaborations
and Resources Group (CORE), and is a founding member of the World Alliance
for Breastfeeding Action (WABA).
Mother-to-Mother
Volunteer Leaders are experienced breastfeeding mothers who have completed
an accreditation program and are familiar with breastfeeding management
techniques as well as current research. They offer practical information
and moral support to mothers through monthly meetings and phone help.
LLL Series Meetings
are informal discussion groups held in the homes of members or in other
locations. Information is presented following a planned schedule of topics
that cover the practical, physical, and psychological aspects of breastfeeding.
The Peer Counselor
Program expands La Leche League’s outreach into resource deprived
communities worldwide. Program Administrators and Peer Counselors receive
training in effective program management as well as mother-to-mother support
and breastfeeding techniques. Peer Counselors serve in many diverse areas
and ways from working within health care systems to individualized assistance.
La Leche League also
offers its help to those interested in establishing Breastfeeding Resource
Centers in areas where there are no Leaders or Groups, as well as Corporate
Lactation Support.
Membership
Members of La Leche League International care about giving their babies
the best. Caring starts with breastfeeding and mothers have many questions,
often best answered by other nursing mothers. Founded in 1956, LLLI has
developed into a worldwide network of caring mothers with experience who
share information, support, and encouragement.
The benefits of LLL
Membership include: a oneyear subscription to the bimonthly NEW BEGINNINGS,
a magazine filled with inspiration, practical hints, book reviews, and
breastfeeding information; a 10% discount on most purchases from the LLLI
Catalogue; and participation in LLL special events, including both local
and international conferences, with a special member’s discount
on registration fees.
Conferences
International and Area Conferences are held periodically for parents and
professionals. Speakers include experts in breastfeeding, parenting, childbirth,
nutrition, childcare, and related topics. Doctors, educators, researchers,
authors, and parents represent a wide range of experiences and opinions.
Resources
La Leche League’s basic manual, THE WOMANLY ART OF BREASTFEEDING,
has sold more than two million copies and is available in 7 languages,
on audio tape, and in Braille. Other LLLI publications are available in
more than 25 languages.
La Leche League is
the world’s largest resource for breastfeeding information. We publish
26 books and distribute more than three million publications annually.
Over 200 books, pamphlets, and tear-off sheets are available as well as
a bimonthly periodical for breastfeeding parents and a quarterly journal
for health care professionals.
Professional
Support
La Leche League has a Heath Advisory Council of 52 professionals in the
areas of pediatrics, obstetrics, allergy, nutrition, psychology, family
practice, and related fields. This Council is consulted on medical problems
and evaluation of new research.
Complementing the
Health Advisory Council are doctors throughout the world serving as Medical
Associates of La Leche League.
The Center for Breastfeeding
Information houses a collection of articles from professional and lay
journals and a database for these materials. Assistance is provided to
researchers through the Research Review Committee.
La Leche League International
is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education
to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians and a long-term
provider for the International Board of Lactation Consultants.
LLLI’s Professional
Advisors also include a Management Advisory Council and Legal Advisory
Council.
Professional
Education
La Leche League International sponsors Annual Seminars for Physicians
which are held in North America and attract participants from all over
the world. They are cosponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics
and The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Workshops for Lactation
Specialists are scheduled in various locations throughout North America
to meet the needs of the emerging health professional who specializes
in caring for the breastfeeding dyad. These workshops are accredited for
certified lactation consultants, registered nurses, and physicians.
La Leche League also
offers Independent Study Modules to health care providers and lactation
consultants interested in receiving continuing medical education credits
as well as CERPS.
Meetings and seminars
for health care providers are also sponsored by La Leche League in other
countries.
